The Leadership Support Team Apprentice PA’s participated in a volunteer challenge on 13th August where we painted a mural on the fence at Learn2Live which sits alongside the Ellen Tinkham School in Exeter.

Learn2Live is an organisation for young adults with learning disabilities, physical difficulties and/or complex needs. Learn2Live offers access to learning, living and social opportunities for these young adults to help them for the future.

There is a fenced courtyard where the young adults have the opportunity to be outside, but the paint on the fence was in very poor condition. We were asked if we could transform the fence and paint a mural of the students’ choice, which was a replica of what the students done themselves using water colours. This included a country field scene with flowers. The students asked if birds and insects could be added to the design as they enjoy watching them in their allotment which is located at Learn2Live.

We were lucky enough to receive donations of paint from CDM Decorating, Property maintenance and Crown Paint. RGB in Torquay also supplied us with paint brushes, trays and rollers (https://www.rgbltd.co.uk/branch-locator/torquay)

We felt that volunteering at Learn2Live was very beneficial to us because being able to do something that bring joy to those in need is a heart-warming feeling and it makes a big difference. Volunteering also brings out team building skills and creativity with those you work alongside with.

Due to COVID and the current situation we are all facing, we completed a risk assessment before our visit to Learn2Live. We abided by social distances rules throughout the day and ensured we were 1 meter apart at all times. We wore disposable gloves and did not share paint brushes.

Natalie Murphy (manager at Learn2Live) was equally impressed and delighted with the work:

“From my perspective I just want to say a massive thank you for taking the time to create something so lovely for our young people. As I’m sure you can remember we are very often time poor here at Learn2Live and as a result the little finishing touches and luxuries are often left in the ideas basket as we have to focus on the necessities.

You have gifted us a beautiful space that our young people can really enjoy and most importantly you incorporated their ideas and requests into the finished project. I have no doubt that the mural will continue to be enjoyed for many more years to come. My deepest gratitude and best wishes to you all.”
