Devon Digital Lives
Devon Digital Lives Volunteer - Issie Atcheson
'Many people in Devon are disadvantaged because they lack the most basic digital skills. Through our volunteering project ‘Devon Digital Lives’, we’re challenging that by calling on and supporting our staff to pass on their knowledge to people in their communities, their friends and their families so fewer people are left behind.'
Previous Apprentice Issie has shared why she got involved:
Volunteering for me has been very beneficial to my development
as a DCC employee. It's been an opportunity to try different and new things, to learn
new skills, and to meet new people.
I gained a huge amount of confidence while being an
apprentice at DCC, and I would partly put that down to volunteering. I learnt
how to build a good rapport with members of the public & also other
colleagues – this has helped me massively going forward in my career. Devon
Digital Lives is a great way to interact with members of the public, especially
if you are not in a public facing role. I was able to connect with
other colleagues who are part of the Devon Digital Lives volunteering team to
share knowledge & ideas.
Working with other volunteers opened my eyes to new ways
of working. Through Devon Digital Lives you may learn new computer &
digital skills that will help you & in turn your team during your day to
day job. Furthermore these new skills that you learn & confidence you gain
may lead to further career opportunities.
Volunteering for me was particularly good for my
wellbeing, it can give you a real sense of achievement and fulfilment. I’ve gained
many opportunities from volunteering while as an apprentice (and as an employee
through the Volunteering policy), including organising/managing events,
interacting & taking a lead in meetings, and generally feeling like I am
furthering myself & my career.
