National Apprenticeship Week 2018
Monday 5th - Friday 9th March National Apprenticeship Week.
National Apprenticeship Week is coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. This year’s theme is ‘Apprenticeship Work’ for individuals, for employers, for the community and for the economy. Devon County Councils Apprentices have been involved in different activities throughout the week to give their support.
Monday 5th, National Apprenticeship Week got ‘kicked off’ to a flying start with a
simultaneous photo shoot at two iconic rugby grounds of hundreds of apprentices
working in the South West. The photoshoot took place at two of iconic rugby
grounds – Exeter Chiefs’ ground, Sandy
Park, Exeter and the Rec in Bath.
Devon County Council Business Admin, Civil Engineering and Transport Planning Apprentices attended the shoot at Sandy Park. The mega gathering celebrates apprenticeships as a ladder of opportunity
for a brighter future and the impact they are making in their community, in
their workplace, in the economy and for themselves.
Wednesday 7th, Tom Satterly one of our former apprentices who is now working as an Economic Development Assistant told us this:
"I joined the Devon County Council Apprenticeship Scheme in 2012 with Devon County Council's Economy team and haven't left! I enjoy my job and I'm passionate about what I do. My department supported me and gave me a career."
Another great success story from one of our former Apprentices to tell others how 'Apprenticeships Work' and kick start your professional career.
Thursday 8th, the Apprenticeship Team were off to Exeter College for the Young Apprenticeship Ambassador Network soft launch. Devon County Council had their very own Young Apprentice Ambassador Amy Kyme there to represent the council. She was joined by Apprentice Ambassadors from other organisations such as the hosts, Exeter College, Exeter University and South West Water.
Following this the Apprenticeship Team attended the Exeter College Apprenticeship Expo held in the sports hall which is the biggest Apprenticeship Event to take place in the South West during National Apprenticeship Week with over 60 employees present. Devon County Council set up their stand in between Exeter City Council and South West Water. With help from Apprentices Gabby Stevens and Charlotte Mullen, we spoke to many different students who were either, about to leave school or college and wanted advice on their next step.
Friday 9th, as part of Amy's Young Apprentice Ambassador role, she signed up to join 10k Talks at St Peter's Church of England Aided School in Exeter for National Apprenticeship Week to speak to Year 11 students about Apprenticeships.
She was joined by two Devon County Council Apprentices, Rhiannon Whyte and Heidi Pounder who are both ex-St Peter's students as well as Amy. They spoke about their experience as an Apprentice and the advice they would give to others who are thinking about applying for an Apprenticeship. There was also an opportunity at the end for the students to ask the three Apprentices questions they had about being an apprentice.

The National Apprenticeship Service saw apprentices and former apprentices across England telling 10,000 people why apprenticeships work.
